Watching Big Birds |

opportunity to watch big birds is often
found in our travels. These are some photos we have taken. |

This particular emu lives near Tucumcari, NM. A native of Australia, it seems to be doing well in it's desert territory. One of the uses people have for the emu is their fat. The oil is used in some cosmetic products and is popular in rub-on pain remedies. |

These wild turkeys were part of a large flock in the hills near Atascadero, Calif. These turkeys don't seem to mind sharing habitat with the local citizens and will carry on long conversations with some of the youngsters who attempt to speak their language. |

This proud and colorful rooster makes his home in Tillamook,OR near one of the cheese factories. He will make his presence known to all in the early morning. |

Some of the waterbirds are quite large. These multicolored Puffins are at home in an Oregon Coast Aquarium Their comical antics will entertain you for quite a while. |

These large Canadian geese took a daily afternoon walk around the campground. He carried on quite a loud argument with a goose across the park during this particular walk. He would call out his challenge and wait for the answer then answer back, occasionally fussing at his mate to try to keep up. She just followed quietly seeming not to be bothered by all his fussing. |

This beautiful egret spent a very long time standing in the water at our campground in Menifee, CA waiting for his dinner to swim by. Finally satisfied, he went out for a stroll in the sunset. The little mud hen kept her eye on the ground so as not to miss a bite. |

And some of the water birds are all business, and eating is their business. This night heron and white egret seemed to be contemplating a bubble bath, but were actually waiting to pounce on any unwary aquatic creature that would swim within their reach. |

This Mallard strutted along on his daily walk alone... while his mate took a nap in the nearby canal. |

This Great Blue Heron flew down close to where we had stopped and proceeded to do a little fishing. He walked carefully and slowly around the edge of the canal, hardly making a ripple in the water while he was watching for his prey to swim past. This is an elegant bird to watch |

We watched these swans, part of a larger flock swimming in the lake in Atascadero, CA. These beautiful birds make a pleasant picture in the reflected rays of the sunset. |
